I'd be willing to bet that 303 will shoot cast with much better ability to fit a bullet 1 or 2 thou over groove diameter. You'll struggle to get a factory jacketed bullet fat enough that shoots well. Of course thats a whole other rabbit hole to go down. Best wishes at getting your project to a point you are happy with it. You seem committed to getting done so I'm sure you'll get there.

Dumbest video on the internet. The “why” behind what this guy is saying is totally off. Good luck taking this approach on public land (claims he is on public land. I call total BS on that.). Seen a lot of guys who think you don’t need anything and they barely ever kill anything. Do you need top of the line camo? No, but to say you need nothing is just silly. Just wearing a face mask makes a huge difference. Gloves is another thing. You can always stand still, but the second you move for your gun or bow, you’re done. However, with camo, even simple camo, you can get away with a lot more movement. It’s absolutely false to say that’s not the case. Also, this only works for deer. Good luck with migratory birds. You’ll be screwed. Ducks will see your plaid. So if you get invited to a duck blind, forget this clown, don’t be a jackass and wear camo. You’ll never be invited back if you don’t.

Tom, great video as usual. I wanted your thoughts on purchasing a new Ruger M77 257. I had a M70 Featherweight 257 Bob previously that would not group - best was about 3 MOA. Ruger #1 rifles have a reputation for vertical stringing as the barrel heats up. Because of the design, the barrel, obviously, is not and cannot be free-floated. It is a hunting gun, not a target rifle.

I've got one , borrowed from a friend. He called it a boat paddle stock which was new to me then I saw your video and there's boat paddle again. This is a Ruger All weather 77 / 22 made in 93. What type rings or mount is needed to adapt to this rifle for scope? I was able to get rings but bolt handle has so much throw it hits scope and can't be pulled back to open.

🤠 The 270 Winchester! Why? Besides Being More Versitle (Bullets From 80 grains to 180 grains, Which Stabalize in a 1 in 10 Twist at the Elevations That I Hunt) It Can Shoot Faster and Flatter! Newer Barnes and Hodgeson's Data Shows The 85 Grain TTSX (With Hunter Powder) Can Be Pushed to 3,835 ft/s and Old Barnes Manual (With Reloader 17) to Over 3,900 ft/s! The 110 grain TTSX To 3,507 ft/s and Sighted in at 350 Yards, It Will be +/- 4.5" Out To 400 yards and drop only 15" at 500 yards! 🔥

In 1964, I was hunting with my Dad in the Davis mountains, Texas. A 10 point muley flush across a ravine running up hill across the mountain. I shot him running, the slug pierced his lung/ heart and did not come out the other side. About 300 yards, luck shot, but I got him. My first buck, I still have his rack. Im now 77. Browning bolt action .243/ 100 gr.

A cartridge is one of the many variables in a setup. Bullet design, bullet weight, action, barrel length, sights... to build a "good" rifle takes many things. 270 win is a great cartridge to build a setup around. OBVIOUSLY!

Newer wood stocks are not even walnut. Many are not sealed well. The days of a standard rifle coming with a nice walnut stock are decades in the past. I used to go into a shop and look at multiple rifles in hopes of finding some nice character in the walnut stock. Weatherby had exotic woods available OTC. I hunt in fowl weather, the woods are quiet and easy to sneak through. Quality synthetic is cheaper than quality wood.

I never started out trying to get on any 6.5 band wagon but when the caliber of rifle is not made in that brand so I looked at all the fundamentals of the 6.5 Creedmoor IT HOLDS MORE POWDER THAN THE 260 rem, you mentioned the shoulder but you forgot that because of that shoulder the case is wider what else it's built on higher pressures and the bullets don't interfere the powder capacity especially when the capacity reaches max this is where the Creedmoor walks past the 260, I never jumped on any Creedmoor wagon I wasn't able to buy the 260 rem but they made the Creedmoor, take both cases fill them with the same powder all the way up every time I do it the Creedmoor case holds more powder, does it matter no use what works and there is a lot that work great, breaks are nice for those boot kicking rifles, most don't need them and the silencer cans why carry them on hunting rifles, competition matches when lots of shooting has to be done fine but if that's your thing go for it, I set my stuff up accordingly where, what, and weather I will be hunting in and that tells me to take my 300win or a 325WSM or a 270 win or 308win 3006spr or the late to the party 6.5 Creedmoor or the rest of the gang, a lot of snow cold deep snow woody area 325WSM, cold longer shots 300win, brushy areas and short shots 30-30 or the slow puncher 44mag, care about the way and where you hunt the way you want to do your hunt you will find out real quick if you brought out the wrong equipment, so aim small, good hunting, and GOD BLESS.

I purchased a stock Enfield 303 in 1990. Broke it down and built a 303 with composite stock, bedded, and scope mount, came with 4 mags. When finished it was a great hunting rifle with a few problems, It only liked full jacket rounds. The gun hated to chamber lead heads I had the same problem with every magazine that it came with. I tried many different brand hunting rounds. But it would only chamber the first 2 - 3 lead heads then would not feed. But with FMJ round never a problem chamber every time. Most places don't let you hunt with full metal jackets. This was in the early 90's. I got lucky and it was about a 1 moa rifle I found a very clean Enfield that must not have seen war.

'91 Ruger m77 mark II all weather in 7mm Rem Mag with a Harris bipod, Alaskan magnum stretch sling that holds 4 rounds and an old Tasco 6-24 Range Finding scope .... with an extra heavy duty ICC aluminum case the whole pkg in 1991 was just $1k ... she shoots Sub MOA with the "Underwood loaded" SST 154g or "underwood loaded" AccuBond 160g .... I redid a sporterized Mauser stock that was as problematic as yours a few years ago. The way I fixed the shading problem was to mix 50/50 Min-wax black oil based paint, and Min-wax Red Mahogany. It took 3 coats IIRC, and it evened out beautifully.

One thing I know from owning break action rifles is that eventually the headspace will increase until the rifle is useless. Every time you open the action it wears a little on the swivel and over time will allow the barrel to move forward ever so slightly because of the wear on the grove and the pin. The falling block will not do this. It takes a lot of shooting but it will happen to the break action.

I had a MK4 in the late 80's in Canada, I used it for hunting deer, it was an amory rifle that had never been issued to troops so it had very few rounds through it when I got, it. I bought it from a friend for $75 (those were the days!). at 100 yards on the 300-yard peep sight, I'd aim about a foot low and I got a number of deer with it. Rock solid dependable good shooting rifle. The only negative it was HEAVY to lug around, but I still loved it, it was much more affordable to own than many of my buddy's other "Hunting" rifles. Cheers

For many years I only bought and used Leupold scopes. Through a series of events, I got a Vortex Viper PST 1X6 to use on a Steyr Scout. The quality of the glass is something special. Have bought a couple more of the Vortex 1X6s for other rifles (MSR). Set on one power it is just like a red dot. To turn it up to 6 power for longer shots is no problem. Still will buy the occasional Leupold 2X10 firedot. The battery closure is easier on the Leupold but on the Vortex on/off and brightness adjustments are easier. Vortex has such high quality glass at a price that is about 60% of the Leupold cost. Your mileage may vary.
